Game Design/Idea Creation

 Game Design/Idea Creation

The first piece of text that we needed to cover went into the discussion of what is the definition of a game and the starting of forming ideas of creating a game. It starts by explaining that many games that have the same premise or mechanics can be called by different names the example was used of the game tic tack toe which has the same premise of the game 3 to 15. It shows that many games have the same idea but they can be tweaked slightly to create a new one. I really like as well near the end of the text to kind of reassure people who may be panicking a bit about actually making a game. there was an example of making one quickly which was slightly reassuring. Also it covered when you hear the word game what comes to mind. Firstly for myself id think of a video game but when you begin to think about it more the term game doesn't have a set definition. you could think of a role playing game like dungeons and dragons which doesn't have an end goal or a childs game which is very simple but passes the time. The text also went through other definitions of what a game is. Some of these definitions contradicted each other to further prove the point that there is not one set definition for a game.

In terms of the second piece I found it a bit difficult to read but some of the points that I took from it was that game studios should have a large quantity of people from different games developers and writers who come from all walks of life. It was shown that staying in one place will create ideas but if you move around a bit and look it areas it will greatly improve your idea flow. Due to all these different developers sharing different ideas and experiences. It also show that there is no set way to come up with ideas as different people work in different ways, a method for creating ideas for one person may work really well for them but it may not work at all for another.

The final piece went into different methods of creating ideas like the last piece a different environment and setting can really help with ideas instead of staying in the one place and trying to force ideas to come. The second would be brainstorming where the task would be decided between everyone working on it and essentially splitting into smaller groups for a set amount of time discussing your groups findings and ideas with everyone else. and then as a collective pointing out the most effective and suitable pieces of information. The third method scamper gives the suggestion of possibly changing or tweaking things that have already been done. for example having a cross over between to genres of games to create an entirely new one for example borderlands which has a crossover of an role playing game and a first person shooter. In terms of the Ramsey mechanic I found it quite confusing to get my head around the concept. It basically suggest gathering as much information as possible and finding connections in your data too form new ideas.........I think.

  1. Hi Adam,

Really enjoyed reading this blog post about Game Design! Games are definitely not easy to narrow down to a simple term. There are so many different types. I enjoyed the second article you read (I chose that too) It was interesting to see how different people brainstorm and come up with ideas and then how they go from there.

Keep up the good work, woohoo

  2. Hey Adam,
Once again good post, I liked the articles that you have chosen to talk about and I do agree with you that games are hard to define since there are so many genres and sub-genres of games out there. I also liked the final article you chose to talk about and it was very interesting to read how some studios might split into smaller groups and tackle some tasks that way.
