For my topic for the book for multimedia development I have to decided to go with discussing and looking into how different forms of media have changed and have improved the way that games have been promoted and distributed before and after release. The two main areas that I want to focus on will be Youtube and twitch. This is because these platforms not only have a large user base between them. But also a large majority of these users primarily look at gaming content.

I thought it would also be beneficial to look at how these two companies started and the choices they made over the years to becoming two of the most popular video and streaming sites. I already knew that youtube started off as a video sharing website which was launched in 2005 by three coders who previously worked at paypal. The first video that was uploaded to youtube was "me at the zoo". Which showed one of the creators standing at an enclosure at the zoo. Through research I found out that while youtube was in beta the site was averaging at around 30,000 users per day. After the site was officially launched on the 15th of December the site had on average 2 million video views per day and by the summer of 2006 Youtube had over 100 million videos being uploaded per day.  Over time this caught the attention of Google and Google ended up buying and acquiring youtube in November of 2006 for 1.65 billion dollars. In 2015 just a little while after Amazon acquired Twitch. Youtube gaming was launched which allowed youtube content creators to also live stream gameplay to the users youtube account.

In terms of twitch. Twitch previously went by the name justin.tv which was launched back in 2007. when it started out Justin tv was more of a social experiment to livestream and share the live of one of its creators Justin Kan. According to the Twitch CEO Emmet Shear, Justin tv originally had around 10,000 viewers. After they how popular the site was becoming with people streaming their gaming content Justin tv was shut down and Twitch was announced in 2011. Both Google and Amazon attempted to acquire Twitch. In 2014 Twitch was bought by Amazon for 970 million dollars.

Another area that I thought would be useful to look at was to try and find some statistics about each platform possibly being how much they have grown over the years and over time what size of that growth was users viewing gaming content. What I have gathered so far is that twitch has over 3 million monthly streamers and in 2019 twitch had the 6ht highest search traffic for video streaming in the world with youtube coming in at number 3. In its first year of being online twitch had the figure of over 3.2 million unique viewers per month and a year later this figure jumped to 20 million per month.
